| Was it Sen Coburn sprinting down to the floor of House of Representatives immediately after tonight's speech to not just shake hands but HUG President Obama? Was I seeing things? |

haha-So very true! Obama looked stunned when that happened.
At least Fallin wasn't chasing him begging for autographs like she did during Bush's SOTU. |

Heh. You saw that too, huh? I had Mrs. Mule rewind the Tivo so we could watch it again. He didn't just Hug Obama, he left his area and pushed his way to the front of the aisle so that he could do it.
I think Coburn was honestly moved by the speech. One thing I will say about the guy is that he has always struck me as a man of convictions. Sadly, many of those convictions are downright evil, but he does have them.
It would be funny to see a picture of that hug crop up around here in 2010, like the infamous McCain/Bush hug photo. |

| It worries me because of Coburn's stands on Social Security and Medicare. What is the real reason for such a hug???? |

Coburn never really struck me as the evil schemer type. Evil, sure. But not a lot of scheming.
If you saw the MSNBC coverage, then you saw that Republicans thought just as highly of the speech as Democrats, and that was pretty damn highly. I think Coburn was just one of those Republicans. |

A few seconds of the video of the hug. I asked Coburn at a town hall meeting early fall about his thoughts on Obama and his response was very positive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTwEMGYaD0U

Well, I got all riled up about Obama kissing "that woman," in front of Michelle, then I realized it was the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. But really, now, is it appropriate for your boss to just haul off and smooch you on the lips? It must be, because now that I think about it, seems like W. used to smooch Condi. Must be a Beltway thing.
Does anyone know how tall Justice Ginsberg is? She looks positively tiny! The welcome she was given by everyone was really heartwarming. |

She may be only five feet tall, but as we used to say in Ninnekah, she covers every inch of the ground she stands on. I don't know as I approve of the kissing of Republicans. Anyone remember Judas kissing Jesus, just before selling him for thirty pieces of silver? I am not calling Coburn Judas. It would take more money than that amount of silver to buy him. |

| Ruth Bader Ginsburg is barely 5' tall. I have met her and she is extremely thin, even before her recent surgery. Quiet spoken and brilliant. |

I know some of Dr. Coburn's family, and I worked with him for a brief while. He strikes me as a man who is genuine and sincere in his beliefs - I just believe him to be sincerely wrong on a number of issues.
He's not like Inhoffe who seems disingenuous and pandering. |

QUOTE OF THE DAY.... George Will's understanding of social norms is on par with his understanding of global warming.
Asked for a "final thought" on the president's speech last night, conservative columnist George Will chose to focus on the fact that Obama was able to wrap his arms around another man, in friendship. "I don't know when men started to hug each other, but hug they do, and look at that," he said.
Really? I don't recall him complaining when George W. Bush kissed Joe Lieberman after a State of the Union address a couple of years ago.
Adam Serwer, who was kidding, responded, "Well I don't know when it started, but it needs to stop. Don't people know that men hugging other men puts you on the lonely path to sin?"

| I had a reflux in the back of my throat when I saw that. However after watching the HBO series ROME recently ... isn't that how they do it?? I mean they bring you in for the hug as they unsheath their daggers? |

Coburn and Obama worked on a government transparancy bill together and I think they like each other and are probably trying to demonstrate the way things should be in the congress. The older senators will tell you that several years (decades?)ago, even if they disagreed on the senate floor, they were friends after hours and that it wasn't that way anymore.
I used to think Coburn was worse than Inhofe and while I still think he's crazy sometimes, I think I like him better than Inhofe because he is more of his own man, is more thoughtful (relatively speaking) and he isn't as mean spirited. I thought the hug was a great moment. |

I'm dismayed that the Secret Service would allow a right-wing extremist this close to our President! |
